PRESS RELEASE - April 16, 2010
Volunteers to Build School Playground in Honour of Soldier Killed in Action

Vankleek Hill, Ontario. Volunteers with the Pleasant Corners Public School Playground Enhancement Committee have announced that the school playground at their school will be dedicated in honour of local soldier Cpl. Patrick Lormand of Chute-a-Blondeau, Ontario, who was killed in action in Afghanistan last September.

It is with great pride that our volunteer Playground Committee can announce that the upgrades to the playground will be completed on the 29th of May and at the end of the day, a dedication ceremony will take place to honour fallen soldier, Cpl. Patrick Lormand,” announced Mary McCrimmon-Leduc, the Vice Principal of Pleasant Corners Public School. “We experienced the reaction of our students last fall when they learned of Patrick’s death. They were deeply touched by this local soldier’s courage and commitment to his country at such a young age. Our playground dedication indeed exemplifies their respect and belief that they too can make the world a better place -just like Cpl. Lormand”, explained McCrimmon-Leduc.

The upgraded playground dedicated to Cpl. Lormand will include additional play structures, and create an outdoor classroom environment, including a shade structure, gardens with paths, trees and shrubs planted by the community. “The parents in our volunteer group have worked tirelessly to make this playground a reality, the fundraising that they have done in our small rural community has been phenomenal and the community’s response even more so,” added McCrimmon-Leduc.

“The Let Them be Kids Foundation has agreed to match dollar for dollar the amount of money we have raised to help finance the purchase of playground equipment to honour Patrick,” explained Tara MacWhirter, the Chair of the Playground Fundraising Committee. “We honour not only a local hero, but a man who served Canada. There is not only a sense of pride in the ownership of the playground, but a national legacy which will live on in our children,” added MacWhirter.

Patrick Lormand, age 21, of the 2nd Battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment, was killed in action in Afghanistan in September 2009.

One of the requirements of the Let Them Be Kids award is that the playground be dedicated to the memory of a fallen hero.

The PCPS Playground Enhancement Committee - based on recommendations from the community - has announced that on May 29th, a massive playground will be built at Pleasant Corners Public School in honour of local soldier, Cpl. Patrick Lormand of Chute-a- Blondeau , Ontario , who was killed in action in Afghanistan last September.

The new playground honouring Cpl. Lormand will include numerous play structures, an outdoor classroom, a shade structure(s), gardens with paths, trees and shrubs planted by the community.

By dedicating the playground to a local fallen soldier, Corporal Patrick Lormand, a person who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan; the area will also serve as a reminder to all who that enjoy it, that freedom does sometimes come at a price. It will also ensure that his life and sacrifice will be honoured and remembered for generations to come.
